Bulgaria: Cambodia, a Key Partner in Asia

Phnom Penh, October 17, 2019 –Bulgaria considers Cambodia as a key friend and partner in Asia, and Bulgaria will do its best to foster its cooperation with the Kingdom as well as to boost mutual understanding between the younger generations.

The remarks were made by President of Bulgaria H.E. Rumen Radev while meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, in Sofia yesterday, during the latter’s two-day official visit in Bulgaria, according to H.E. Kao Kim Hourn, Minister Attached to the Prime Minister.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen shared the same ideas as H.E. Rumen Radev, stressing that both countries can strengthen their relations and cooperation through bilateral mechanism, at ASEAN-Europe and Asia-Europe levels.

Both leaders spoke highly of the long-lasting friendship between the two countries, established in the 1960s and wanted to see the increase in the two-way trade which is now still limited, at just US$6 million.

H.E. Rumen Radev thanked His Majesty Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia, for his invitation to pay a visit to Cambodia, and highly appreciated Samdech Techo Hun Sen’s contribution to peace and security in Cambodia and the region.

For his part, Samdech Techo Hun Sen recalled his first visit to Bulgaria when he was 27 years old, and expressed his gratitude to Bulgaria for its support to Cambodia, especially in human resource training.

The Cambodian Premier also encouraged Bulgarian investors and tourists to do business in and visit Cambodia. Moreover, he expressed his hope that Bulgaria will cooperate and participate in the Asia-Europe Summit to be hosted by Cambodia next year.

On “Everything But Arms” trade preferential scheme, Samdech Techo Hun Sen requested Bulgaria as a member of EU to provide justice to Cambodia, underlining that democratisation process in Cambodia does not go backward.
