Phnom Penh, February 25, 2020 –Cambodia’s economic growth in 2020 would not be at the same rate as previously predicted at 6.5 percent, said Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen.
Addressing to the graduation ceremony of nearly 600 students of the Royal School of Administration here this morning, Samdech Techo Hun Sen said previously, the Cambodian economy was forecasted to grow at least 6.5 percent this year, but the prediction will be affected by the COVID-19 ongoing outbreak.
The Premier added that COVID-19 has dramatically affected some economic pillars, especially tourism.
According to Samdech Techo Hun Sen, the country would achieve an economic growth of around 6 percent this year.
Speaking at a press conference at the Peace Palace yesterday, the Prime Minister said in February 2020, foreign arrivals to Cambodia saw a decline by more than 60 percent, especially the Chinese tourists whose number dropped by 90 percent.
Tourism businesses in Siem Reap province have seriously suffered from COVID-19 fears compared to other main tourist destinations in the country, he underlined.
Cambodia has so far recorded no new case of COVID-19, after an infected Chinese man recovered and returned to his homeland. Besides China, the disease has been spread to about 30 nations around the world, and the Republic of Korea ranks second in terms of confirmed cases.
