Cambodia Calls for UNIDO’s Support for Two Development Policies

Phnom Penh, October 15, 2019 –Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, has requested the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) to support two development policies of the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC).

While receiving courtesy call from UNIDO’s Director General Mr. Li Yong in Hungary yesterday, on the sidelines of the 3rd Budapest Water Summit, Samdech Techo Hun Sen expressed his conviction that UNIDO will play a key role in helping Cambodia develop its policy on rice production for export and implement its Industrial Development Policy 2015-2025, according to H.E. Kao Kim Hourn, Minister Attached to the Prime Minister.

The Premier also informed the UNIDO director general about the RGC’s commitment to turn Preah Sihanouk into a key province in support of the country’s economy, and to continue focusing on the development of special economic zones (SEZs) there. Cambodia is now working on road and sewage system reconstruction in the province, which would cost about US$150 million, he added.

For his part, H.E. Li Yong spoke highly of Samdech Techo Hun Sen’s leadership and informed the Prime Minister of his plan to come to Cambodia next year to visit SEZS.

The UNIDO director general also pledged to encourage support from China as well as the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank for Cambodia’s development projects.

In 2017, Cambodia and UNIDO signed an agreement to begin their cooperation, which has so far been conducted smoothly, particularly in the areas of food, industry, and environment.
