Cambodian PM Joins a Ramadan Iftar Dinner with Nearly 5,000 Cambodian Muslims

Phnom Penh, May 07, 2019 –Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen of the Kingdom of Cambodia participated here this evening in a Ramadan Iftar Dinner with some 4,750 Cambodian Muslims.

 

The event, taking place at Koh Pich Convention and Exhibition Centre, was also attended by H.E. Dato’ Sri Dr. Haji Wan Junaidi bin Tuanku Jaafar, Member of Parliament of Malaysia, H.E. Dato’ Aidit bin Ghazali, a Member of Selagor Islamic Religious Council, 320 Muslims of 32 nationalities, and representatives of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen has, in a recent message, extended best wishes to the Cambodian Muslim communities, both inside and outside the country, and other Muslim communities around the world on the occasion of Ramadan 2019.

Ramadan is the holy month of the Muslim communities, which is determined by the sighting of the new moon. During this holy month, Muslims abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs to purify the soul, refocus attention to their faith, and practice self-sacrifice. The Iftar is the evening meal Muslims have to break their fast during Ramadan.

Buddhism is the state religion of Cambodia, but the country fully respects the religious freedom. 95 percent of the population of about 15 million are Buddhists. Islam has about 300,000 followers, and some 0.25 percent of Cambodian people follow Christianity, animism and so on.
