Cambodia, Myanmar Look for More Cooperation

Phnom Penh, April 30, 2019 –Leaders of the Governments of Cambodia and Myanmar have pledged to boost more cooperation between the two nations, H.E. Eang Sophalleth, Assistant to the Cambodian Premier, told reporters.

The promise was raised in a bilateral meeting here this morning at the Peace Palace between Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen and visiting H.E. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, State Counsellor of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.

 

H.E. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi said this is her first official visit to Cambodia and the purpose is to further strengthen and expand the relations and cooperation between the two countries, especially in the areas of culture, religion, education and economy.

For his part, Samdech Techo Hun Sen expressed warm welcome to H.E. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s visit and suggested both sides to hold joint activities to mark the 65th anniversary of their diplomatic ties next year.

The Cambodian Premier thanked the Burmese side for allowing Cambodia to build a Buddhist temple in Myanmar and for providing training for Cambodian Buddhist monks. According to Samdech Techo Hun Sen, 94 Cambodian monks have finished their studies while four others have been pursuing their studies in Myanmar.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen called for strengthening of implementation of already-signed cooperation agreements, suggested the exchange of students and announced to offer 10 scholarships to Burmese students for the 2019-2020 academic year.

For the economic sector, the Prime Minister asked both sides to study the issues of double taxation, investment protection agreement and to look into other potential areas for bilateral cooperation in order to boost the two-way trade up.

H.E. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is currently on a three-day official visit in Cambodia since April 29. This morning, she also paid a courtesy call on Cambodian National Assembly President Samdech Akka Moha Ponhea Chakrei Heng Samrin and this afternoon, she is scheduled to have separate audiences with His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia, and Her Majesty the Queen-Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk at the Royal Palace, after meeting with Senate President Samdech Vibol Sena Pheakdei Say Chhum. Tomorrow, she will visit Angkor temples in Siem Reap province before concluding her visit in Cambodia.
