Statement of the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia

The spokesman of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia is dismayed by the statement of the Delegation of the European Union to Cambodia, issued on 4 May 2017, making specific reference to the decision of the Cambodian court which is absolutely the domestic affair of Cambodia.

The above said statement is a clear violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations Article 41 (1) which stipulates that all diplomatic missions have duty to respect the laws and regulations of the receiving State and they also have a duty not to interfere in the internal affairs of that State.

The spokesman wishes to inform the public that the decision of the court was made in accordance with Cambodia’s Code of Criminal Procedure article 205 and 208. By law, the investigating judge can decide to extend the pre-trial detention twice with a period of 6 (six) months each.

The spokesman urges the Delegation of the European Union to Cambodia to strictly adhere to their duty as stipulated in the above-said Convention.
