PM Joins in Weaving the Longest Krama at Veal Preah Merhu Square

AKP Phnom Penh, June 07, 2018 —Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen took part in weaving the longest 1,000-metre Krama (scarf) to show the solidarity of Cambodians for the Guinness World Record, at Veal Preah Merhu square in Phnom Penh this morning.

The typical red and white Krama weaving campaign which began since Feb. 14 achieved now more than 900 metres long.

Any Cambodian can contribute to the weaving under the spirit of “(We) believe (that) the Khmers can do it”, but they need to be trained first at the weaving training hall inside Veal Preah Merhu.

In the form of sturdy garment, Krama is a most common belonging of Cambodians with many uses, including as a scarf, to cover the face and head (especially in order to protect it from wind, dust, sunlight, etc.), as hammock for children, and for decorative purposes.

Expectedly, the campaign will not only unveil another pride of Cambodia, but also communicate the uniqueness of the country’s cultural identity widely across the world.

Krama is not the first effort of Cambodia for the world record. In 2015, a four-ton Nom Ansorm, a traditional Cambodian rice cake made from sticky rice, mug bean, and pork, also won a Guinness World Record. Besides, in the same year, the country broke the Guinness World Record for the largest Madison dance with 2,015 participants.
