Peace Acknowledged as Foundation for Gender Equality

Phnom Penh, March 05, 2020 –Cambodia has determined the theme of “Peace is a Foundation for Gender Equality” for the celebration of the in-coming 109th International Women’s Day in 2020.

The theme was seen as very responsive to the emerging context in Cambodia.

Ms. Sam Sothary, a staff at Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone, observes better awareness of women’s rights and role in the society, thanks to the sustained peace and social stability.

“I support the observance of the March 8 Women’s Day, as it is a reminder to everyone to continue fixing inequality among women and men,” she added.

A postgraduate student, Ms. Keo Sreyneang, shared an interesting perspective that the Women’s Day celebration also helps remind all women and girls about their important role in the society.

She continued that, “because of peace and enabling environment, women can now access to high education which is a means for them to fully realise their full potential.”

Ms. Soun Sreyhouchdalis who is an NGO worker hopes that with the signified role of women, Cambodia will continue to address violence against women and more voices of women will be amplified through media.

The Royal Government of Cambodia as well as the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and all concerned stakeholders have been working hard to promote gender equality in Cambodia, and ensuring peace as foundation for it to further flourish.
