Cambodian PM: Phnom Penh Developed, But Challenges Remain

AKP Phnom Penh, June 29, 2018 —Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, has expressed his pride over the progress and development of Phnom Penh capital city, but meanwhile shared his concerns over some remaining challenges.

According to the Premier’s public speech at the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of overpass and underpass at Chom Chao roundabout in Phnom Penh this morning, the current main challenges for the capital are traffic congestion, waste management, and seasonal flood.

“We are really happy to see the capital’s progress from one day to another, i.e. from a ghost city to a developed one as today, from 300 square kilometres to more than 600 square kilometres, and the construction sector boom […] but this capital city has been facing with traffic congestion, clogged drains during rainy season, and waste issue,” he underlined.

After the country’s liberation from the genocidal regime on Jan. 7, 1979, the population in Cambodia was only about 5 million, but now the figure rose to nearly 16 million, while the number of vehicles reached over 2 million, said Samdech Techo Hun Sen, calling on the public to understand the issue and the real situation of the country.

Prime Minister Hun Sen also expressed the Royal Government’s commitment to settle the challenging issues with various projects such as construction of flyovers and underpass, etc.
