Samdech Techo Hun Sen Denounces Politicisation of Disaster

Phnom Penh, June 25, 2019 –Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, has denounced politicisation in the face of adversity.

The Premier made the points while addressing the media at the site of the collapsed seven-storey building in Preah Sihanouk province yesterday evening.

Expressing his heartfelt condolence for the loss of the affected families by the collapsed building and thanking hard work and contribution of both the authorities and the public in the rescue operations, Samdech Techo strongly denounced the politicisation of such disaster.

There are some criticisms framed that such incident is a result of too much influx of Chinese investment in the coastal province.

“Let us not blaming any national for such unexpected adversity…It is a politicisation game of the opposition… I have heard too much… Cambodia needs investments to develop its economy… and any national doing business in Cambodia must adhere to the country’s laws and regulations,” said Samdech Techo Prime Minister.

A seven-storey building in Village III, Sangkat IV of Sihanoukville collapsed in the dawn of June 22, and the rescue operations were concluded with the records of 28 people died and 26 injured.

Under the leadership of Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, the response team as well as the Royal Government of Cambodia is working hard to make necessary support to the families of the victims.

This collapse is an unfortunate incident, and it gave us lessons learned and experiences that we can use to improve our response, underlined Samdech Techo.

He added that our emergency and disaster response forces needs to further sharpen their skill and be located at military units as well as armed force and police departments fully ready with timely and effective intervention for any unfortunate incidents, including building collapse, air crash and cruise accident, etc.

Our next step is to conduct a comprehensive investigation to bring those behind this illegal construction to the court, continued the Prime Minister.
