The 16th Asia Media Summit Officially Kicks Off

Siem Reap, June 12, 2019 –The 16th Asia Media Summit themed “Media Digitalisation – Focusing on Developing Markets” was officially opened in Siem Reap provincial city under the presidency of Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

Addressing the function, Minister of Information H.E.  Khieu Kanharith said that it was a great honour and pleasure for the Kingdom of Cambodia, particularly the Ministry of Information, to host the 16th Asia Media Summit 2019 on June 12-13 in Siem Reap.

The Asia Media Summit is one of the leading international broadcasting events that give opportunities to ministers responsible for information, broadcasters, media practitioners, industry leaders, academia, researchers, experts and media policy makers throughout the globe to gather and discuss on how to develop media’s quality and to cope with challenges during the times of high technological revolution, H.E. Khieu Kanharith added.

He continued that this year, the event was preceded by five pre-summit workshops which held on June 10-11, 2019, including the master class on leadership in the fourth industrial revolution, the workshop on combating disinformation, the workshop on trends in 4K technology, the workshop on impacts of augmented reality and virtual reality in media, and lastly the workshop on creating impactful contents in digital era.

With the good and effective collaboration of Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) as the Organiser, the summit is expected to realise the participants’ expectations through its timely theme of “Media Digitisation – Focusing on Developing Markets”.

For his part, Samdech Techo Hun Sen expressed his warm welcome to all local and foreign participants and deep appreciation of the Ministry of Information and AIBD as well as those behind the organisation of the important gathering.

The event brought together 600 delegates from 42 countries with active interaction on the podium by at least 70 professional and experienced panellists and speakers at the plenary sessions.

The summit serves as a venue for other side-line meetings such as ministerial meeting on media cooperation, bilateral meetings of participating delegates and the CEO meeting to discuss fake news among others, according to H.E.  Khieu Kanharith.

Asia Media Summit originated in 2004 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and was held subsequently in Malaysia until 2008; the sixth round of the meeting was moved to Macau of China in 2009 and then to Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, India and now to Cambodia.
