Cambodia, Vietnam To Expand Bilateral Cooperation Based on Past Relations

Phnom Penh, February 26, 2019 -Cambodian and Vietnamese leaders have agreed to use past relations and experience as a basis to expand the bilateral cooperation between the two neighbouring nations.

H.E. Eang Sophalleth, Assistant to the Cambodian Premier, told this to reporters after the meeting here this morning between Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen of the Kingdom of Cambodia and visiting Vietnamese President H.E. Nguyen Phu Trong.

This is H.E. Nguyen Phu Trong’s first visit to Cambodia after he was elected General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and President of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, he underlined.

In the meeting, he pointed out, H.E. Nguyen Phu Trong said this visit was made at the time when Cambodia has just commemorated the 40th anniversary of the collapse of the Khmer Rouge genocidal regime. He also congratulated the Kingdom on its progress and achievements.

In his response, added the assistant, Samdech Techo Hun Sen said Cambodia’s current development is inseparable from the assistance of the Vietnamese army, people, party and government. Besides, he congratulated Vietnam on hosting the U.S.-North Korea Summit.

After the one-hour meeting, both leaders presided over the signing ceremony of five cooperation documents, including the protocol on the amendment to protocol for the implementation of Cambodia-Viet Nam Agreement on Road Transport, the amendment to Articles 6 and 17 of Cambodia-Viet Nam Agreement on Water Transport; the Memorandum of Understanding on Grant Aid of US$25 million for the implementation of Cambodian National Assembly’s Administrative Building Construction Project, the bilateral trade facilitation coordination between Cambodia and Viet Nam on tax preferences for 2019-2020, and the Memorandum of Understanding on Tourism Cooperation for 2019-2021.

H.E. Nguyen Phu Trong arrived in Cambodia yesterday afternoon for a two-day state visit in the Kingdom. Following his arrival, he had a separate audience with His Majesty the King Norodom Sihamoni and Her Majesty the Queen-Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk, at the Royal Palace.

This morning, H.E. Nguyen Phu Trong called on His Holiness Buddhist Supreme Patriarch General Tep Vong, Supreme Patriarch of Dhamma Mahanikaya, and His Holiness Samdech Preah Abhisiri Sugandha Mohasangharajah Dhipati Bour Kry, Great Supreme Patriarch of Dhammayuttikanikaya of Cambodia, and met with Samdech Vibol Sena Pheakdei Say Chhum, President of the Senate, and Samdech Akka Moha Ponhea Chakrei Heng Samrin, President of the National Assembly.
