Cambodian Prime Minister Calls for Participation from the Public in Krama Weaving Campaign

AKP Phnom Penh, February 21, 2018 – Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen appealed to the public as well as the workers to take part in weaving the longest Krama, a campaign for the Guinness World Record.

The premier made the appeal while holding a get-together with more than 15,000 workers and employees from 15 factories and enterprises in Teuk Thla area, Khan Sen Sok this morning.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen said he will also join this 1,000-metre-long red and white Krama weaving campaign to set new world record, launched last week at Veal Preah Merhu, in front of the National Museum, Phnom Penh.

The campaign’s official launch were presided over by His Majesty Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia, and Her Majesty the Queen-Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk, accompanied by Samdech Kittiprittbandit Bun Rany Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian Red Cross, and many other senior officials and royal family members.

Any Cambodian can contribute to the weaving under the spirit of “(We) believe (that) the Khmers can do it”, but they need to be trained first at the weaving training hall inside Veal Preah Merhu.

In the form of sturdy garment, Krama is a most common belonging of Cambodians with many uses, including as a scarf, to cover the face and head (especially in order to protect it from wind, dust, sunlight, etc.), as hammock for children, and for decorative purposes.

Expectedly, the campaign will not only unveil another pride of Cambodia, but also communicate the uniqueness of the country’s cultural identity widely across the world.

Krama is not the first effort of Cambodia for the world record. In 2015, a four-ton Nom Ansorm, a traditional Cambodian rice cake made from sticky rice, mug bean, and pork, also won a Guinness World Record. Besides, in the same year, the country broke the Guinness World Record for the largest Madison dance with 2,015 participants.
