Samdech Techo Hun Sen Continues His Visit and Attention to Workers

AKP Phnom Penh, December 18, 2017 —Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen held here yesterday at Koh Pich Convention and Exhibition Centre a get-together with over 4,600 representatives of workers and employees from 53 factories in Kampong Speu province.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen expressed his satisfaction with his factory visit programme which allows him to learn more about the workers’ challenges and hopes. He has so far held 23 gatherings with garment workers and employees, of which 14 visits to factories and 9 meetings at Koh Pich Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen took the opportunity to re-appeal for collaboration between employers and employees in ensuring better working conditions and increasing income, and to reiterate the Royal Government of Cambodia’s polity to promote the workers’ social welfare and the protection of their rights and benefits.

The premier also urged all workers as well as the Cambodian people as a whole to continue taking part in maintaining peace and development, stressing, “no peace, no development.”

Before, there were only 64 garment factories in Cambodia, but now the figure rose sharply to 1,107. In total, there are 11,168 registered factories and enterprises, employing more than 1.2 million workers. The current minimum wage of garment, textile and footwear workers is US$153 per month, up from only over US$30 before. In January 2018, they will get US$170 as monthly minimum wage without counting other benefits.
