Construction of Prek Kdam-Thlea Ma’am Section of NR5 Improvement Project Begins

AKP Phnom Penh, May 21, 2018 –The construction of a road portion from Prek Kdam in Kandal province to Thlea Ma’am in Pursat province with a total length of 135.21 kilometres started this morning in a ceremony held in Kampong Chhnang province.

The groundbreaking ceremony was presided over by Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia and Japanese Ambassador H.E. Horinouchi Hidehisa.

Built at an estimated cost of some US$261 million funded by an ODA loan from the Government of Japan and a budget of the Royal Government of Cambodia, the road portion is part of the Improvement Project of National Road No. 5.

According to the Ministry of Public Works and Transports, the National Road No. 5 Improvement Project (Prek Kdam-Poipet) under JICA ODA loan is divided into three sections – North Section (Battambang-Serei Sophorn) of 84.74 kilometres long, South Section (Prek Kdam-Thlea Ma’am) of 135.25 kilometres long, and Middle and End Section (Thlea Ma’am-Battambang and Serei Sophorn-Poipet) of 146.04 kilometres long.

The National Road No. 5 serves an importance rules in domestic transportation and eventually contribute to improvement of the interconnectivity of transportation sector between ASEAN and Mekong Sub-region.
