During the meeting, the Under-Secretary-General expressed her high appreciation for Cambodia’s expertise in clearing landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) left over from past conflicts. She added that mine and UXO clearance is a complex undertaking requiring substantial time and resources. The Under-Secretary-General also commended the capabilities and experience of Cambodia’s peacekeeping forces, which have actively contributed to United Nations peacekeeping operations in numerous countries. She observed that this reflects Cambodia’s strong commitment to promoting peace and sharing its valuable experience with the international community. Furthermore, she recalled her mission to Cambodia prior to 1991, during which she contributed to efforts to facilitate the repatriation of Cambodian refugees to their homeland.
In response, Samdech Thipadei expressed his deep appreciation for the valuable contributions of the United Nations to Cambodia’s peace process and socio-economic development. He also briefed the Under-Secretary-General on Cambodia’s achievements in landmine and UXO clearance, as well as the successful hosting of the Siem Reap–Angkor Summit on a Mine-Free World under the Ottawa Convention in Siem Reap in November 2024.
