NA President Wants More In-depth Cambodia-Myanmar Relations

Phnom Penh, April 30, 2019 –Samdech Akka Moha Ponhea Chakrei Heng Samrin, President of the National Assembly (NA) of Cambodia, received here this morning at the NA Palace H.E. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, State Counsellor of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.

 

In the meeting, Samdech Heng Samrin expressed the NA’s intention to see the Governments of Cambodia Myanmar continue fostering their cooperation in the fields of agriculture, trade, tourism, education, and culture in particular.

Samdech Heng Samrin appreciated the good cooperation between both countries’ legislative bodies, especially their mutual support on international arenas like ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) and Asia-Europe Parliamentary Partnership (ASEP).

The NA president informed H.E. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi that Cambodia will host the 13th Meeting of ASEP (ASEP-13) in 2020 and hoped that Myanmar NA will take part in the event.

Samdech Heng Samrin thanked Myanmar for the scholarship provision to Cambodian Buddhist students, and sought its support for Cambodian investments (about 30 companies) in Myanmar.

For her part, H.E. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi briefed Samdech Heng Samrin on the current political situation in Myanmar, and on the outcomes of her bilateral meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen.

The Myanmar’s state counsellor laid stress on the important roles of NA in making law, protecting people’s benefits and being a crucial mechanism in the enhancement of democracy. She pledged to boost the cooperation between the two NAs to the next level, particularly the experience exchange at all levels.

H.E. Ms. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi voiced her support for more in-depth cooperation between both countries and suggested a cultural cooperation between Cambodia’s Angkor Wat Temple and Bagan of Myanmar.
